Sowers sisters, Ross and Chaplow lead Squaw Creek event

A packed field of 75 players filled Avalon Squaw Creek for the ‘Joe’ Dickey Electric Greatest Golfer Juniors Championship qualifier.

The Sowers sisters of West Middlesex were strong in their divisions, as was Danny Chaplow of Canfield and Zach Ross of Moon Township — all capturing seats in the 2023 finals.

Kate Sowers won the u17 Lane Funeral Home girls division.

“I’m pretty happy with my score. I kept the driver going and had a few birdies today,” she said of her 74 — edging out 2023 champ Kaitlyn Hoover.

Zach Ross’s 76 beat out JFK’s Julian Bolino with 77 and Ursuline’s Anthony Bake with 78 for the u17 Coaches Burger Bar boys win.

“I hit everything well, and kept the ball in play. That’s always a good thing. A sand save on the back side was a big motivator.”

Danny Chaplow, Canfield, was top qualifier in Panera u14 Boys play. He shot 82 to edge out Poland’s Matthew Morrone. Previous qualifier Santino Toscano was low scorer with a 79.

“My putter started getting hot at the end,” said Chaplow. “I knew I was tied on the on 18. I lined up the putt, I saw it tracking and it ended up dropping. I got really happy.”

Paige Sowers won the Ambrose Eye Care u14 Girls play with a 79 in her Greatest Golfer debut.

Greatest tees off twice this week — Tuesday at Mill Creek and Thursday at Pine Lakes.
The Greatest juniors series, presented also by Youngstown Tile Retail Design Center and Phantom Fireworks, features 10 events from May 7 to July 20, then a skills championship, followed by a 36-hole finals July 21-22 at Avalon Lakes. Event costs range from $45-$65, and there is no seasonal membership fee. It’s Ohio and Pennsylvania’s least expensive yet most competitive summer play for high schoolers.
