Van Horn’s 69 heats up a chilly Mill Creek

A 69 by Bryce Van Horn of Warren JFK injected heat into an otherwise wet and overcast round Tuesday at Mill Creek for the ‘Joe’ Dickey Electric Greatest Golfer juniors.

Joining Bryce for qualifier honors were Matilyn Zines, United; Matt Morrone, Poland, and Gianna Ross, Canfield.

“I wasn’t hitting too may greens,” said Bryce. “But I was getting up and down. I was chipping everything within like 4 feet.”

He won the Coaches Burger Bar u17 flight, just ahead of Mick Ambrose, Canfield, at 71 and Nolan Froelich, Ursuline, at 74.

Zines’ 78 put her just ahead of West Branch’s Shaylee Muckleroy (79) and Southeast’s Gracie Westover (80) in the u17 Lane Funeral Home girls division.
“It could have even been better,” said Zines. “I had two double bogeys, and on No. 18 – I almost got an albatross. It hit the pin and rattled out.”

Morrone rattled a pin, too, on his way to a 78 in the Panera u14 Boys division.

“I was bad on front but I turned it around on the back. The best part of my day today was the putting. My best shot was No. 3 — I hit the pin, and cracked the flagstick.”

Rocco Bautti (Neshannock) had the low round of the division with a 75. He already qualified earlier this season. Tyler Guerrero (Mooney) was right behind Morrone with an 80.

Greatest’s youngest competitor ever made his debut. Preston Tolnar teed it up as a 9-year-old and posted an 81 for 4th place.

Gianna Ross scored an 83 to earn top honors in the u14 Ambrose Family Eye Care Center play.

“The weather was — ehhh – but I liked the golf and the people I played with. Driving was best part of the day; putting was so-so.”
