A rookie teen-ager and a veteran champ lead more than 340 players who teed off in the 14th Annual Farmers National Bank Greatest Golfer tourney.
Matilyn Zines, a senior-to-be at United Local bested 3 previous Greatest champs on Day 1 with a 72.
“Putting was on today,” said Zines of a round she said was otherwise just steady all around. This is her first adult tourney. “For Day 2, keep a level head and don’t get too excited. Day 2 is tougher.”
Past Greatest champ Jonah Karzmer shot 66 to lead Mens Open.
“I got to play with two YSU guys who outdrove me by 40 yards every tee,” said Karzmer. “They made a ton of birdies, and I just tried to keep up with them.”
Day 2 is Saturday before the best 96 players make it to The Lake Club to compete for 13 championships.
