Gustas, Colbert earn finals in Dickey Greatest

The ‘Joe’ Dickey Electric Juniors play was scorching Thursday at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in Hermitage. And it wasn’t just Mother Nature. Twelve players posted scores in the 70s across the 4 divisions — with 2019 champ Jake Sylak getting so hot, he went red — shooting a 1-under par 71. Thursday was the 5th qualifier in the 6-event series that leads up to the championships next weekend, July 17-18. The final qualifier is Tuesday at Avalon Lakes. In Thursday’s play, 4 players qualified. In Boys u17, Cameron Colbert, Hickory High School, earned the title nod with a 76. Two other scores bested his, including Sylak. But they had qualified in earlier events. In Girls u17, McKenzie Gustas, also of Hickory, shot 76 to earn her championship spot. In Boys u14, Matt Morelli’s 84 earned him a spot. The two better scores in his division had already qualified. In Girls u14, Kate Sowers scored a 38 in 9-hole play to earn her title spot. All scores can be found on the WFMJ Greatest page.
