Gustas, Sam lead way at Dickey Electric qualifer at Tam O’

McKenzie Gustas and Ryan Sam tackled Tam O’Shanter Golf Course and the Greatest Golfer field Thursday in the ‘Joe’ Dickey Electric Junior Golf Championship qualifier.

Gustas, the 2020 winner of the ‘Joe’ Dickey u17 division, was playing in her first Greatest of the season having been playing a more regional schedule this summer. She carded a 77 in the Magnolias on the Green u17 Girls play to earn her place in the July 23-24 finals. The Hickory High student has Tam O’ as her home course.

She was ahead of Wilmington’s Kaitlyn Hoover at 86, and Canfield’s Jocelyn Zhao at 89.

Boardman’s Sam carded the day’s best — 73 — to win the Joseph Nohra Insurance u17 Boys field. Just two shots behind him were Aidan Enoch of Hickory and Rocco Turner of Cardinal Mooney.

In the Kreps Drywall Boys u14, it was CJ Brew of Hubbard earning a finals bid with an 87. The top scores of the day were another battle of Alexander Eckstein and Mick Ambrose.  The last time they squared, it was Eckstein 77 to 78. Thursday at Tam O’ it was Ambrose leading 78 to 80. They both already qualified in previous events.

In u14 Girls Ambrose Family Eye Care play, it was Kendall Johnson of Canfield earning a finals bid with a 120. The day’s best round belonged to West Middlesex’s Kate Sowers, who shot 78. She previously qualified at Pine Lakes.

‘Joe’ Dickey Greatest Golfer is a part of the Greatest Golfer championship golf series for amateurs ages 12 to 80. The Dickey series is 10 events for boys and girls in ages 15-17 and 12-14 from May to July at some of the Youngstown area’s top family-owned courses. The top performers play in the championship July 23-24 at Avalon Lakes.

Three qualifiers remain: July 13 at Tamer Win, July 16 at Olde Dutch and July 20 at Avalon Lakes.
