Liburdi, Toscano and Morelli lead Salem Hills

Chilling, putting and grinding.

Those were the themes from the winners of today’s ‘Joe’ Dickey Electric juniors qualifier event Thursday at the Ben Broderick-run Salem Hills Golf Course.

Ava Liburdi, Hickory High School, led the Lane Funeral Home u17 Girls with a 79.

The Pennsylvania state champ two years running said it was just a fun day as she outlasted a 81 from Marilyn Zines, United, and an 86 from Shaylee Muckleroy of West Branch

“I came to have fun. It was chill round and I enjoyed the girls I played with,” said Liburdi. “I was driving it good all day. On 15, I birdied the par 5. I had a great drive and iron. I missed the eagle putt, but got the birdie.”

Matthew Morelli, Neshannock High School, has emerged as a top Coac he’s Burger bar Boys u17 player, and posted a 73 to edge out 4 other 70s.

“The key to today’s success was my short game. On the first 4 holes today, I had to get up and down for par. I got near the green, chipped up to 2 feet, and made the par.”

A 75 by Badger’s Austin Mariani and a 77 from Ursuline’s Nolan Froelich trailed Morelli.

In the Panera u14 Boys play, Santino Toscano rode a hot putter to continue a torrid season and score a 73..

“The thing that saved me today was my putting,” said the New Wilmington High School player. “I hit good shots to allow great putting chances. When you putt, you can win. My best hole was on 16, I went 5-iron off the tee, then spun my wedge back to 20-feet for a birdie putt.”

Poland’s Matthew Morrone posted an 81 and Rocco Bautti of Neshannock posted an 85.

In Ambrose Family Eye Care girls u14 play, Rhyloh Turpack scored a 114 to win her division.
