Two days after Bryce Van Horn fired a 69 for Greatest Golfer’s first 60s round in juniors play in several years, Matthew Morelli stepped up and said “Hold my soda.”
The senior from Neshannock went 1 shot better – posting a 68 at Pine Lakes Golf Course Thursday.
“I putted well and had great wedges to 10- and 15-feet that I was able to convert,” said the Neshannock senior-to-be.
“I birdied the first hole and was never over par after that.”
Morelli’s 4-under 68 on the 6,400-yard layout was his best round ever. Greatest’s junior record is a 64 from Michael Porter 4 years ago.
Andrew Fredenburg and Dante Turner were right behind Morelli with 71 and 72 respectively. Thirteen of the 34 players in the u17 Boys Coaches Burger Bar division finished 80 or better on the day. Fredenburg earned the qualifier spot as Morelli had already qualified at a previous event.
“Putts were falling pretty much the whole day,” said Fredenburg of Warren JFK. He earned the qualifying spot to the finals July 21-22. “My irons were decent, and my driving felt good all day.”
