Parto’s Sept. 18 event helps stricken son

It’s fun to watch signups for The Greatest Golfer roll in, and amid the home courses that pop up from the players: Tippe, Lake, Pine, Avalon, etc.

Every summer, without fail, someone will sign in with Parto’s Golf Learning Center near Hubbard as their home course.

The Par 3 course and practice facility is a passion place for Tom and Tammy Parteleno and it’s neat to see their dedication reflected in the Greatest Golfers who register as “ … of Parto’s Golf Center.”

Chaz Ekoniak of Struthers High School was one of Greatest’s top junior players this summer — carding 70s in several events. When asked about the key to his success in golf, without hesitation came this answer:

“I play at Parto’s and it’s such a good place to learn to play, and Parto keeps it so affordable for high school kids. We’re there all the time.”

On Sept. 18, Parto needs one back from the golf community.

Tom and Tammy will host the 2nd Annual Michael’s Miracle Blind Scramble Golf Outing to benefit their son Michael, who has been diagnosed with Batten Disease. Most of his difficult story can be found here on the gofundme page.

This is how Tammy tells of the day they learned their fate:

“On March 16, 2020 at 1:07 p.m. our hearts were shattered and our faith shaken.  As we sat holding hands listening to a doctor say “Michael has a genetic disorder that has caused his vision loss.  There is no treatment, there is no cure and it is 100% fatal. I’m very sorry.”

Batten Disease is a rare, progressive neurological disease that has taken Michael’s vision. It has begun to affect his ability to speak as well as some difficulties with his short-term memory. Michael will not live past his teens.

Proceeds will go toward Michael’s medical expenses, including weekly braille lessons as well as physical, occupational and speech therapy that takes them to hospitals around the region. Home modifications will be planned as well.

Play is all day Saturday at Parto’s Golf on Coitsville-Hubbard Road in Youngstown. It is $150 for a foursome. There are 4 waves of tee times: 9 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. (night golf glow sticks; priced at $250 per team).

The event also has a basket raffle, a 50/50 raffle, live music and a silent auction. Sponsorship opportunities for the event are also available.

To register a team, or to donate items for raffles and auctions or help sponsor the event, please contact Tom Parteleno at 239-404-1117.

Monetary donations can also be made at any Premier Bank (formerly Home Savings & First Federal) branch in the name of Michael’s Miracle or via Venmo (@Tammy-Parteleno).
