Porter, Gustas eye dual ‘Joe’ Dickey repeats — a first for Greatest

The Greatest Golfer Junior golf season ended 2020 with McDonald’s Michael Porter and Hickory’s McKenzie Gustas atop the junior golf leaderboard. Headed into Saturday’s finals of the 2021 Greatest junior season, both players are positioned to stay there. Porter shot 74 Friday at Avalon at Squaw Creek to take a 2-shot lead in the 2021 “Joe” Dickey Electric Junior Championship of The Greatest Golfer. In the Girls u17 bracket, Gustas posted an 82 for a 5-shot lead. Porter, playing in the Boys u17 Joe Nohra Insurance Division is chased by 76s from Blake Hood of Alliance, Dominic Kapics of Fitch and Ryan Sam of Boardman. Sam and Porter traded places atop the leaderboard all Friday. Sam was 2-under coming into the last 6 holes of Squaw. The Dickey series was 10 events for boys and girls ages 15-17 and 12-14 from May to July at some of the Youngstown area’s top family-owned courses. The top performers played in the championship Friday and Saturday at Avalon Lakes. Viewing is free and open to the public. Play starts at Noon Saturday at Avalon Lakes.
