Greatest Golfer juniors double-dipped this week, playing a second match in two days — this one Wednesday at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Hubbard, and 4 players locked in seats for the July championship of the ‘Joe’ Dickey Electric juniors play.
Luke Rupeka of Trumbull Country Club, Miya Cohol of Mill Creek, Alex Conley of Mill Creek and Andrew LaPolla of Trumbull Country Club all earned finals bids with top showings Wednesday.
Rupeka’s 76 was tops in the u17 Boys Coaches Burger Bar division. He was chased by a 77 from Anthony G. Cesario of Old Avalon Golf Course, and an 80 from Nathan Kelly of East Liverpool Country Club.
In the u17 Girls Magnolias on the Green division, an 85 by Kaitlyn Hoover, Tanglewood Golf Course, led the way. As she had already made the finals, Cohol’s 91 gave her the day’s top honors. A 97 by Serena Grenga, Henry Stambaugh Golf Course, was next.
The hottest golf battling now and likely for the next few years was on display in the Avalon Pizza u14 Boys play. A pair of 76s from LaPolla and Alexander Eckstein, Mill Creek, led the field. Eckstein had qualified Wednesday at Mill, allowing LaPolla to seize a finals seat. Right behind them at 77 was Mick Ambrose, Avalon at Buhl Park, who already earned his finals seat. And posting a 79 was Matthew Morrone of The Lake Club.
In the Ambrose Family Eye Center girls division, an 85 by Aubree Philibin, Mill Creek, led the way. Since she already has a finals seat, an 88 by Conley, Mill Creek, locked her spot. An 89 from Lindsey Hoover, Tanglewood Golf Course, finished the Top 3.
There are 4 qualfiers left — the next one a shotgun start next Thursday at 8 a.m. at Tam O’Shanter in Hermitage. The Greatest juniors format features 8 qualifers with players winning bids or earning points to a spot in the Kreps Drywall u17 and Dr. Flauto u14 championships July 22 and 23 at Avalon Lakes.
