The 2022 “Joe” Dickey Electric Junior Greatest Golfer teed off Thursday at Salem Hills Golf Course, and veterans Samantha Calderone of Warren JFK and Chaz Ekoniak of Struthers led the way in u17s play — earning the first seats in the July championships.
Ekoniak shot a 77 to lead the u17 Boys Coaches Burger Bar division. His finish was one shot ahead of McDonald’s Caleb Domitrovich and his 78. Right behind was Ursuline High’s Nolan Froelich with an 80.
“My driving was good today, but I struggled with the putting; lots of lip-outs,” said Ekoniak.
Calderone carded an 84 to lead the u17 Girls Magnolias on the Green division play. She was followed by Matilyn Zines of United and Jocelyn Zhao of Canfield. They both shot 92.
In u14 play, 2021 champ Mick Ambrose won his division today, as did Chloe Leskovac in hers.
Ambrose shot 77 in the Avalon Pizza u14 Boys play. Leskovac shot a 95 in the Ambrose Family Eye Center girls division.
Greatest Golfer juniors tee off next on Wednesday at Squaw Creek. Signups are open through Monday at TheGreatestGolfer.com. Youngstown Tile and Phantom Fireworks also sponsor Greatest.
